THINGS GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR WASHER
1. What is the life expectancy of this machine? Anything less than
fourteen years is unacceptable. Ask to see the life expectancy claim
in print.
2. What is the model year of this machine? Many high volume stores
are able to sell at low prices because they are selling outdated
equipment. There is nothing wrong with buying last year's equipment
(it may even be a better machine), but you should know what you
are getting.
3. What is the load size? Is it the proper size for your family's
needs?
4. What is the rinsing capability? How thorough a job does it do
getting the soap out of the clothing?
What is the water usage? Water costs. The more used the more expensive.
If you buy a washer and dryer at the same time, the probability
is that you will have to replace the washer before the dryer- When
the time comes to replace the washer, you will most probably not
be able to match the dryer color. You will eventually be stuck with
either a discordant color scheme, or having to throw out a perfectly
good dryer match. Good dryer, so that washer and dryer Manufacturers
change colors every few years. Many people believe that this is
just so that consumers can't find a replacement and have to buy
two new appliances, instead of one. This probably isn't chicanery
on the part of the companies.
Since washing machines stay pretty much the same (we haven't had
a major new advancement in twenty years), color is used as a major
element to create excitement in new model. Design teams keep changing
the least popular colors hoping for one that will make a major sales
impact. Naturally, if fate has its way, the color you need will
be the one they canceled.
Bear in mind that the fancier the machine is, the more it will cost.
Simplicity is a virtue. If you have an average size family, you
probably need the following features:
Three temperature settings: hot, medium and cold.
Cold water is good for rinsing. Hot is best for washing- Medium
may be needed for delicate fabrics. Never wash with cold water the
Is that delicate, use a product like Woolitc and hand wash.
Two speed settings: Regular and delicate. One or
two wash size settings: Most families would be better off- if you
just used the large load setting, but if you only have a couple
of pieces a small or medium load setting is nice. If there is only
one or two of you in the family, why do you need more than a regular
size (cheaper) tub?
Any other settings are of little practical value.
Manual buttons and dials. Electronic touch pad
controls look nice and make you feel like you're in the 21st Century.
They are very expensive to replace and do not have a track record
for long lasting reliability. I have had a lot of customers who,
once they found out how expensive the replacement electronic controls
were, preferred to buy a brand new washing machine with traditional
controls.
Don't buy a larger tub than necessary. There are
only two different tub sizes, regular and extra large. The extra
large tub only cleans two pounds more clothing and can cost you
a lot more money. When you buy a washer with a large tub you usually
get stuck with a lot of added features.
Energy Efficiency. With a washing machine, you
are the prime factor in determining the energy efficiency. That's
because the efficiency stems from the temperature and the amount
of water you use. The hot water tank is the prime user of energy.
Use a lot of hot water when you wash the clothes and the bill goes
up, the energy efficiency goes down. Use small amounts of cold water
anti efficiency sky rockets. The only problem with this is that
generally speaking, the hotter the water, the better the cleaning
action. As a general rule, the more water you use, the better the
rinse. Only you can decide whether energy efficiency or cleaning
power is more important.
