LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR STOVE
All the leading products have beautifully engineered features designed
to make life easier. The more you read about them, the more entranced
you get. Soon you want a stove with every feature on the list. You
the homemaker (whether male or female), have to be pleased. This
is an appliance that you are going to use daily. Be practical, but
don't scrimp. If you don't get what you want, you'll be an unhappy
camper for the next fifteen years and the entire family will suffer.
One feature you have to look out for is size. It may be that stoves
are getting to be like men's ties. Back in the 1950's the stoves
were 40" wide. In the 1960's the manufacturers stopped making
that width and started making stoves 30" wide. Thousands of
Americans had to remake their kitchen counters or be stuck with
10" of dead space next to their stove. Now, the scuttle butt
is that the manufacturers are going back to 10" widths. This
should make the kitchen remodel very happy but it is going to be
very expensive for the rest of us.
Here area few drawbacks to some of the most popular features:
• Smooth top stoves look beautiful. But you really have to
be a cleaning fanatic to live happily. Everything makes a mess.
• Burners that turn up, instead of pull out for cleaning can
be a problem. The burners that just turn up for cleaning are soldered.
If a soldered burner burns out, you have a big service charge. If
pull out burner burns out, you pull it out, go to the store, and
replace it.
An electric stove creates a great deal of heat. Keep it close to
the sink and away from the refrigerator.
You'll find that choosing a stove today is a difficult proposition.
Here are some "musts."
Do make sure you have the stove plugged into a 250 watt power supply.
Insufficient power is a prime cause of failure.
Do make sure the stove is perfectly level.
Do make sure the cupboards over the stove do not have heavy items
in them. They can fall out and damage the stove top.
Do make certain that the stove is anchored in place so that it cannot
tip forward and cause a serious accident.
Do make certain that a fire extinguisher is located close to the
stove. A stove top or oven fire can easily spread and cause a serious
house fire or grave injury.
Do make certain that you pull the plug before you attempt do-it-yourself
repairs.
Burner pans are made to reflect heat upward. Any stain decreases
the efficiency of your burner. When something boils over the pan
should be cleaned as soon as the burner is cool enough to allow
you to remove the burner pan. To clean, use water and an organic
cleaner like Simple Green’s. If that doesn't work, try soaking
the pan and try again. If the stain", are still "hanging
tough", use a bar of Bon Ami". Never use an abrasive,
like scouring powder or a scouring pad. If the burner pans get so
stained that they no longer look good or reflect properly, buy genuine
replacement burner pans from your appliance store or service department.
The cheap, universal replacement pans you can get at hardware stores
are too light to hold their brightness for long.
Never use aluminum foil to act as a reflective surface on top of
an old burner pan. The foil is too light to work adequately, will
become loose and can cause a very nasty electric short It is a very
good idea to look at the repair manual for the appliance, while
you are shopping for the appliance repair Manual should be very
clear, with lots of photos. The terrors should look easy. The easier
the repairs are, the more consumers driven the manufacturer is.
Buy the repair manual at the same time you buy the appliance.
WARNING: Do not take chances with your life. After you have decided
what the problem is, pull the main power plug before you attempt
to make repairs.
