LEARN ABOUT YOUR DRYER
The dryer is usually the "companion" of the washing machine.
Therefore, unless you are purchasing a replacement, it is very probable
that you are going to have the same brand of dryer as washer.
DRYER MAINTENANCE: Monthly:
Wash the lint screen out with mild soap and water. Just for the
heck of it, take your lint screen over to the sink, hold it flat
and pour a hand full of water over the mesh.
See how slowly it goes through the mesh? If it's really bad, the
water may not be able to penetrate at all. This is caused by the
build up of detergent and fabric softener on the mesh fibers.
If water can't get through, air can't get through. To work at maximum
efficiency, the air going through the dryer must exit at a factory
specified rate. Build up on the lint filter will slow down that
rate and cause big service problems, in addition to increasing the
fire hazard.
DRYER MAINTENANCE: Yearly
1. Once a year you need to give the inside of your dryer a complete
cleaning. To do this you will have to pull the plug on the dryer
and remove either the front or the rear panel of the dryer. Then
take a refrigerator brush and the vacuum cleaner tool hose and suck
up all the lint that has accumulated around the inside of the machine.
You will be amazed at how much lint there is.
Take special care to clean around the ends of the motor. Making
these areas lint free is vital to the longevity of the dryer motor.
When air cannot go through the motor, the motor will overheat and
cause premature failure.
You are going to have to get down on the floor to do this job properly.
Get a flashlight and shine the light into all the nooks and crannies
of the drier. Where-ever there is a hint of lint dust, get rid of
it.
The screams that you hear are from the service industry. If you
and the other appliance owners would just follow this one piece
of advice and clean all the dust out of your machines, you would
cost the service industry hundreds of millions of dollars in service
charges.
2. Exterior dryer vent flaps often wedge open. This can cause trouble
three ways: #1 it allows heat to escape from your house during the
winter. #2 it makes your dryer extra cold during the winter and
adds to drying time. #3 it allows little critters to climb into
the vent line. I have actually had to remove birds nests complete
with little birds from dryer vents. Once a year, go to the outside
of your house and check to see that the dryer vent is moving smoothly.
Clean it thoroughly. Make sure that the vent flap hinges are moving
freely.
3. Take the vent line off and give it a thorough cleaning. You give
thorough to get all the lint that has attached itself to the inner
surface of the vent out of the vent line. Take the rigid vent line
outside; take the elbows off either end. Run your garden hose through
the vent line. Clean it out thoroughly.
